Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson, oil on canvas, 1869, by William Garl Browne, collection of the Stonewall Jackson Foundation, Lexington, Virginia.

Thomas J. Jackson and family, Lithograph by unidentified printmaker, collection of the Stonewall Jackson Foundation, Lexington, Virginia.

This rare print depicts Thomas J. Jackson, Mary Anna Morrison Jackson, and their daughter, Julia, posing for a family portrait; however, this touching family scene never took place. The unidentified lithographer --- probably working years after Jackson's death --- prepared a composite view based upon three individual photographs, including the popular war-time portrait of Jackson made in Winchester and two later portraits of mother and child. No photograph of the Jackson family is known to exist, although two composite prints of the Jackson family, including this one and an 1866 print by William Sartain, were made to meet the popular demand for such domestic scenes.
